Here are the 3 Tips Lawyers Need to Read for Working Remotely in a sustainable way, one in which maintaining their well-being is a priority.
The pandemic popularized working remotely. This practice already existed, but has now extended to new realms, including law firms. At Rossa, we encourage lawyers to take advantage of these technological changes without compromising their peace of mind. With these tips, you will become an expert at working from home, prioritizing your well-being and boosting productivity.
1- Create the Right Work Environment for You
For lawyers to successfully work from home you need differentiated spaces. The ability to avoid mixing home and work is what we need to develop. “Setting some boundaries will go a long way toward keeping you sane”, says Brian Barret, Executive Editor at WIRED Magazine, who shares his experience of working remotely for nearly a decade.
First, define the part of your home that’s going to be exclusive for work. That way, the rest of space is “home” territory and the two do not blend. Second, try to maintain the same routine and rituals you had at your tradicional job. Showering and getting well dressed will help your brain enter work-mode. Establishing a mental boundary between work and home also includes limiting distractions, as unwanted notifications on your devices.
2- Don’t Burn Yourself Out
This merging of home and work not only has affected domestic life, but has made people work more hours than they should. Weekends disappear, turning life into a mess. Just as you plan meetings and tasks, make sure you schedule breaks and moments for entertainment, hobbies and catching up with friends. Relax, stress does awful things to your body.
Working from home often leads to multitasking, a mentally exhausting activity. To avoid this, optimize your work hours by focusing on one task at a time. This way, you’ll get more done and faster. Switch your devices to Do Not Disturb mode and set a time to answer emails. Concentration is hard to maintain, imagine losing it because someone sent you a meme.
3- Put Your Mental Health First
You need to take care of it. And that’s no easy task, as it involves many aspects like eating nutritious meals, keeping a good sleep hygiene, doing physical activity on a regular basis, having time to relax, and so on. You can learn more about maintaining your wellness with this general guideline from the National Institute of Mental Health.
This tip is especially important because lawyers who work from home spend a lot of time sitting in front of a desk, moving very little and with an incredible workload. Going for a walk whenever possible can clear your mind and spark creative thinking. Also, consider exercising your mind through meditation. Having literally nothing on your mind for about five minutes a day can lower your levels of anxiety and stress.
